Award-Winning Play “Eclipsed” Opens at CCT!

Caribbean Community Theatre concludes its 32nd season with Eclipsed, an award-winning play written by Danai Gurira, best known for her role as Michonne on The Walking Dead TV series.  The production tells the tale of the captive “wives” of a Liberian rebel officer who form a hardscrabble sisterhood.  With wit, compassion, and defiance, this gripping play unearths the wreckage of war and celebrates the women who navigate and survive the most hostile of circumstances.

There will be seven performances of Eclipsed over three weekends: June 9-10, 16-17, and 23-24, 2017, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, and a Sunday matinee at 4 PM on June 18.  Michelle Greene and Eileen Bishop Des Jardins direct the five women who make up the cast: Lisa J. Charles, Saskia Corke, Anumaat Davis Kahina, Kaila Francis, and Ava Murray.

Eclipsed offers a chilling, humanizing and surprisingly funny portrait of transformation and renewal.  The captives’ lives are set on a nightmarish detour by civil war, but with the arrival of a new girl who can read — and the return of an old one who can fight — their possibilities are quickly transformed. Drawing on reserves of wit and compassion, these defiant survivors ask:  When the fog of battle lifts, could a different destiny emerge?

“Riveting…A gut-wrenching saga told with poignancy and wit.” —Variety.

“A surprisingly vivacious portrait of … the human impulse to adapt…conveyed with a lovely authority, at times even a whimsicality. [In this] authentic-feeling production, [Danai Gurira’s] tight-knit kinship with these characters comes across as if she shared the stage with them.” —Washington Post.

“Stirring and sobering, and funnier than you’d expect…a deeply felt portrait of women…finding and testing their own strength.” —Washington City Paper.

Tickets are $20 for adults, with discounts for seniors, students and CCT members, and may be purchased at the CCT box office prior to each show, or in advance online at www.cct.vi.  This play is not recommended for children under age 16.

All performances will be held at the Caribbean Community Theatre at #18 Estate Orange Grove in Christiansted, St. Croix.  CCT is jointly supported by a grant from the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.  For more information, please call 340-778-1983, or email: eileencct@gmail.com.
