Corie Bratter and Paul Bratter are newlyweds settling into their first home in New York City, a fifth-floor walkup with bad plumbing. He’s a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she’s a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. When Corie decides to set up her anxious mother with their peculiar neighbor, Mr. Velasco, everything that can go wrong, does. In the course of the wild adventure that follows, Corie complains that Paul is too staid, too boring. She suggests that he become more spontaneous, running “barefoot in the park,” for example, as Paul comes to grips with how very different they are from each other.

The play is set at the home of the bride in Tennessee during the newly married couple’s overdone wedding reception. The five bridesmaids have found refuge in the room of the sister of the bride. The women come to realize, among other things, that, despite their differences, they have more in common with each other than any of them do with the bride.
